The Dove and the Ant

A dove saves a drowning ant with a leaf. Later, the tiny ant returns the favor by saving the dove from a hunter.

The Dove and the Ant

On the bank of a sparkling river, a little ant was searching for a drink of water. She leaned a bit too far over the edge, slipped on a smooth stone, and tumbled into the rushing water with a tiny splash.

"Help! Help!" cried the ant, kicking her six little legs. The current was strong, and she was carried away from the bank. Just when she thought all was lost, a soft shadow passed over the water.

A Leaf of Rescue

A gentle dove had been watching from a branch above. Seeing the ant in trouble, she quickly plucked a broad green leaf and dropped it right beside the struggling ant. The ant scrambled onto the leaf and held on tight as it floated safely to the shore.

"Thank you, dear dove!" said the ant, wringing the water from her legs. "You saved my life. One day, I hope to repay your kindness."

The dove smiled. "You are very welcome, little one," she cooed, "but you are so tiny. What could you ever do for me?"

The Hunter's Aim

A Growing Friendship

After that day, the ant and the dove became the best of friends. Every morning, the ant would climb the tree roots to visit, and the dove would tell her stories of the faraway lands she had seen on her flights.

"You are so lucky to fly," sighed the ant one day. "I can only crawl." The dove ruffled her feathers kindly. "And you are so lucky to be small," she answered. "You can hide where no one can find you, and you can lift ten times your own weight. Everyone has a gift."

The ant thought about this all the way home, and she decided the dove was the wisest bird in the whole forest. Little did either of them know that the ant's small gift would soon be needed.

A few days later, the ant was crawling through the grass when she saw a hunter hiding behind a bush. He was raising his bow, taking careful aim — straight at the dove, who was resting peacefully on her branch, unaware of the danger!

Without a moment's thought, the ant ran up the hunter's leg and bit his ankle as hard as she could. "Ouch!" yelled the hunter, jumping in surprise. His arrow flew wide of its mark. The noise woke the dove, who spread her wings and soared safely into the sky.

Kindness Repaid

The dove circled down and landed beside her tiny friend. "You were right, little ant," she said warmly. "No kindness is ever too small to be repaid."

Moral of the Story

One good turn deserves another. Even the smallest kindness can come back to save us.
