The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse
A country mouse visits his town cousin for a grand feast, but the dangers of city life send him happily back to his simple home.
In a quiet meadow lived a Country Mouse in a cozy little burrow under an old oak tree. He had simple food — barley, corn, and cool water — but he was happy and safe. One day, he received a visit from his cousin, the Town Mouse, who arrived with his nose in the air.
"What a dull life you lead!" sniffed the Town Mouse, nibbling a grain of barley. "Come and visit me in the town. You will see what fine food really is."
A Grand Feast
The Country Welcome
Before they left for the town, the Country Mouse insisted on treating his cousin to dinner in his own burrow. He laid out his best barley, some sweet corn, a few hazelnuts, and a bowl of cool spring water.
"Is this all?" asked the Town Mouse, wrinkling his nose. "No cheese? No cake? My dear cousin, you live like a beggar!"
"It is simple," said the Country Mouse cheerfully, "but it is mine, and I eat it in peace. No cat has ever set foot in my burrow, and no broom has ever chased me from my table."
The Town Mouse laughed. "Peace is all very well, but you have never tasted real food. Come with me tomorrow, and I will show you what living truly means!" The Country Mouse agreed, though a small voice inside him whispered that he might regret it.
So the Country Mouse packed his little bag and traveled to the town. The Town Mouse led him into a great house and down to the pantry, where the shelves were piled high with cheese, cakes, honey, and sweet fruits.
"Eat, cousin, eat!" said the Town Mouse proudly. The Country Mouse's eyes grew round with wonder. He had never seen such food! Just as he took his first delicious bite, they heard a terrible sound. Scratch! Scratch! It was the house cat!
Danger in the Pantry
The two mice ran for their lives and squeezed into a tiny hole, their hearts pounding. When the cat finally padded away, they crept back to the food. But hardly had the Country Mouse tasted a crumb of cake when the pantry door burst open. In rushed the cook with a broom!
"Out! Out, you pests!" she shouted, sweeping wildly. The mice tumbled over each other to escape.
Home Sweet Home
Safe at last, the Country Mouse shook the dust from his fur. "Thank you, cousin," he said, "but I am going home. Your feast is grand, but I would rather eat my plain barley in peace than your rich cakes in fear."
And off he trotted, back to his quiet burrow under the old oak tree, where he lived happily ever after.
Moral of the Story
A simple, peaceful life is better than luxury mixed with danger. Contentment is the truest wealth.
