In a crooked little cottage at the edge of the whispering forest lived Willa, the kindest young witch you ever met. She used her magic only for good things, mending broken bird nests, sweetening sour apples, and lighting lost fireflies' way home. But on Halloween eve, disaster struck. Willa's broom was gone! It had been her grandmother's broom, polished smooth by a hundred Halloween rides, and Willa loved it more than anything in her cottage.

The Missing Broom

Willa searched under the bed, behind the pumpkin barrels, and inside the chimney. No broom. "Oh no," she groaned, "the midnight sky ride starts in two hours, and a witch without her broom is like a bird without wings!" Then she remembered. That afternoon, a sudden sneeze, "Aaa-choo!", had sent the broom zooming out the window all by itself. It could be anywhere in the forest by now. Willa grabbed her lantern and hurried outside, calling, "Broom? Broooom?" Only the wind answered. Her lantern light bobbed among the trees as she hurried down the mossy path, her long cloak sweeping the fallen leaves. Somewhere in the dark, an owl hooted softly, as if to say, "Keep looking."

Friends Remember Kindness

But Willa had not noticed the small eyes watching from the bushes. It was Ruby the rabbit, whose sore paw Willa had bandaged last spring. "The witch is in trouble!" Ruby thumped. Soon the whole forest was helping. Sammy the squirrel searched the treetops. Hazel the hedgehog sniffed along the forest floor. Even grumpy old Badger joined in, muttering, "She did fix my leaky roof." Hazel the hedgehog found a long brown bristle near the blueberry bushes and held it up triumphantly. "The broom came this way!" she squeaked, and everyone cheered. They searched behind every mushroom and under every fallen log, calling out to one another in the dusk.

Found Before Midnight

Just as the moon rose high, a tiny voice squeaked from the tallest pine tree. "Up here!" It was Pip the mouse. There was Willa's broom, stuck fast between two high branches, its bristles tangled with pine needles. Willa hugged every single animal. "Thank you, my wonderful friends!" she cried. With the owl's help, she climbed up and freed her broom just as the clock began to strike twelve. And because there was still a little magic left in the night, Willa took all her friends for one short, swooping ride across the starry Halloween sky. The animals laughed and held on tight as the broom swooped over the glowing village, and Willa promised them hot pumpkin soup back at the cottage afterward.

Moral of the Story

Willa learned that kindness always finds its way back to you. The good you do for others plants seeds of friendship that bloom exactly when you need them most.
