Tommy and the Thankful Tree
Tommy hangs a paper leaf on the school Thankful Tree every day of November and discovers how much he truly has to be grateful for.
At Lincoln Elementary, right by the front door, stood a tall paper tree that Mrs. Baker, the art teacher, called the Thankful Tree. It was bare and brown on the first of November, and every student could hang one paper leaf on it each day, with something they were thankful for written on it. Tommy, a quiet third-grader, stared at the empty tree. "I can't think of anything," he told his best friend Anna. "My family is not rich, my shoes are old, and I never get the good snacks." Anna smiled. "Start small," she said. "Just one little leaf."
The First Leaf
That afternoon, Tommy cut out a green paper leaf and wrote, "I am thankful for Mom's pancakes." He hung it on the lowest branch. The next day, after his dad fixed his bicycle, he added a yellow leaf: "I am thankful for Dad's strong hands." Day by day, the leaves grew: "I am thankful for Anna, who saved me a seat at lunch," "I am thankful for my teacher, who helped me read a big word," and "I am thankful for the rain, because it makes puddles to splash in." Soon Tommy was rushing to school each morning, excited to add another leaf.
A Tree in Full Color
By the week before Thanksgiving, the Thankful Tree had burst into color, with hundreds of leaves fluttering like a real autumn tree. Tommy's own branch was so full that his leaves were bumping into Anna's. On the last school day before the holiday, Mrs. Baker gathered everyone around the tree. "Look what gratitude can grow," she said softly. Tommy stepped back and stared. His leaves told the whole story of his November: his family, his friends, his teachers, his dog Biscuit, the warm soup on cold nights. His eyes filled with happy tears. "I did not know I had so much," he whispered to Anna.
The Best Leaf of All
That evening, Tommy cut out one last golden leaf at home. On it he wrote, "I am thankful that I learned how to be thankful." On Thanksgiving morning, he taped it to the fridge for his whole family to see. At dinner, everyone went around the table sharing their thanks, and Tommy's leaf started a new family tradition that lasted for years.
Moral of the Story
Gratitude grows when we look for it every day. The more thankful leaves we hang, the richer our lives become.
