Every night, Milo the mouse peeked out of his tiny hole under the kitchen floor and looked up at the sky. There, round and yellow and glowing, hung the Moon. Milo's little nose wiggled with excitement. It looks exactly like a giant piece of cheese, he whispered. The biggest cheese in the whole world!

The Round Yellow Cheese

Milo stared at the moon-cheese every single night. He imagined nibbling it, crunching it, sharing it with all his mouse friends. He drew pictures of it with a crayon. He even saved his tiniest crumbs of real cheese, just in case he ever got to taste the sky one.

His mouse friends laughed at him. Milo, you silly mouse, said Squeaky. The moon is far, far away. But Milo did not mind. He loved the moon, cheese or not. Every night he climbed onto the windowsill just to be closer to its golden glow.

A Plan to Taste It

One night, Milo decided to climb to the very top of the tallest bookshelf to get closer to his cheese. Up, up, up he went, his little paws gripping tight. But the moon was still very far away, glowing softly. Milo sighed. He would never reach it, no matter how high he climbed.

From the top of the bookshelf, the moon looked no bigger than a coin. Milo stretched up on his tiptoes and reached as high as he could. His whiskers trembled with effort. Still, the moon stayed far away, shining gently, as if smiling at his try.

Milo climbed back down the bookshelf, his heart full of wonder. He curled up in his cozy hole, and the moonbeam followed him, spilling silver light on his little bed. That night he dreamed the sweetest dream of all.

The Moon Shares Its Light

Just then, a beam of moonlight fell right into Milo's little hole, making it warm and cozy. Milo smiled. The moon was not cheese at all. It was something even better: a night-light for everyone, shared with every mouse, bird, and child in the world. Milo curled up in the moonbeam and fell fast asleep.

Moral of the Story

Some things are not for eating but for sharing, like moonlight, kindness, and love, which belong to everyone.
