Sammy the Sleepy Sloth
Sammy the sloth sleeps more than anyone in the forest and discovers that rest helps him grow big and strong.
Yaaaaawn. That was the sound of Sammy the sloth, hanging upside down from his favorite tree branch. Sammy was the sleepiest animal in the whole rainforest. While the parrots squawked and the monkeys swung, Sammy blinked slowly, curled his fluffy arms around his branch, and drifted off to sleep. Again.
The Slowest Snack in the Forest
It took Sammy a whole hour to eat one leaf. Munch. Yawn. Munch. Yawn. The toucan laughed, Hurry up, Sammy, the sun is setting! But Sammy just smiled his sleepy smile. He knew that rushing was for other animals. Slow and restful was his way, and his way made him happy.
The wise old owl once asked Sammy if he ever got bored of sleeping. Sammy opened one eye and said, Bored? Never. My dreams are full of adventures. Last night I dreamed I was a fast cheetah. The night before, a soaring eagle. Sleep takes me everywhere, without moving an inch.
The Big Race Nap
One day the forest animals held a great race. Sammy watched the rabbits zoom and the deer dash. He waved as they ran past, then curled up in a patch of soft moss and took a lovely long nap. When everyone finished, they found Sammy dreaming with a smile, and they all laughed kindly. Sammy had won the best prize of all: rest.
The rabbits, panting and tired, lay down beside him on the soft moss. Maybe Sammy is right, said the smallest rabbit. A little rest feels wonderful. And soon the whole racing team was napping next to the champion sleeper of the forest.
Grow While You Dream
That night, the wise old owl told the little animals a secret. While Sammy sleeps, his body grows strong and his heart grows brave. Sleep is not lazy, said the owl. Sleep is how little bodies become big and strong. Sammy yawned in his sleep, as if to say, I told you so.
The little animals nodded sleepily. From that night on, nobody laughed when Sammy took his naps. They understood that sleep was his special magic, the quiet way he became the strongest sloth in the forest.
Moral of the Story
Good sleep helps little bodies grow big and strong, so snuggle up and let your dreams do their gentle work.
