The First Thanksgiving Feast
A gentle, kid-friendly retelling of the first Thanksgiving, when Pilgrim children and Native American children shared a harvest feast of friendship.
A long, long time ago, a group of families called the Pilgrims traveled across the ocean to a new land. The journey was hard, and their first winter was cold and hungry. Little Hannah, a Pilgrim girl of eight, often stood at the window of her small wooden house, watching the trees and wondering if they would ever have enough to eat. But in the spring, something wonderful happened: they met new friends, the Wampanoag people, who had lived on this land for a very long time and knew all its secrets.
New Friends
A kind man named Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to plant corn in the rich soil, how to catch fish in the rivers, and how to find sweet berries in the woods. Hannah loved learning beside a Wampanoag boy named Little Fox. "This is how we plant the seeds," Little Fox explained, dropping corn kernels into the earth. "And when the corn grows tall, we will all eat together." Hannah showed him her wooden doll, and Little Fox showed her how to weave a bracelet from soft grass. Soon they were laughing like old friends, even though they spoke different languages.
The Great Harvest
When autumn came, the fields were golden with corn, the gardens were full of pumpkins and beans, and everyone cheered. The Pilgrim leader smiled and said, "We must have a great feast to say thank you for this harvest and for our friends." For three whole days, they prepared food: roasted turkey, corn bread, pumpkin, fish, and berries. Hannah and Little Fox helped carry baskets of food to the long tables set up in the clearing. "Thank you for teaching us," Hannah said to her friend. Little Fox grinned. "Thank you for sharing," he answered.
A Feast of Friendship
On the day of the feast, Pilgrims and Wampanoag sat side by side, ate together, played games, and sang songs. Hannah sat next to Little Fox, sharing her corn bread with him while he shared his sweet berries with her. As the sun set in orange and gold, Hannah looked around at all the smiling faces and felt warm inside. This was the very first Thanksgiving, a feast not just of food, but of friendship and thankfulness between new friends.
Moral of the Story
Thanksgiving reminds us that friends can come from anywhere, and that sharing what we have makes every celebration sweeter.
