The Little Turkey Who Learned to Share
A greedy little turkey hoards all the corn on the farm until the harvest feast teaches him that sharing makes food taste better.
On Maple Farm, in the golden days before Thanksgiving, lived a little turkey named Toby. He had shiny brown feathers, a bright red wattle, and the biggest appetite on the whole farm. Every morning, when the farmer scattered corn across the yard, Toby pushed his way to the front with his wings spread wide. "Mine! Mine! Mine!" he gobbled, guarding the corn pile so no one else could come near. The hens, the ducks, and even the shy little rabbit watched with hungry eyes, but Toby never shared a single kernel.
The Hoarded Corn
One evening, Toby dragged a whole sack of corn into his nest and sat on top of it like a king on a throne. "All this corn is mine," he said proudly. "I will eat it all by myself, and I will never be hungry again." But as the night grew cold, Toby heard a soft sound outside his nest. It was a young hen named Daisy, coughing and shivering. "Toby," she whispered, "my little chicks have not eaten since morning. Could you spare just a few kernels of corn?" Toby's heart squeezed a little. He looked at his big sack, then at Daisy's tired face, and slowly he pushed three kernels toward her. "Take them," he mumbled, turning away.
The Empty Feeling
The next morning was Thanksgiving, and the farmer's wife set up a long wooden table in the yard for a harvest feast. Every animal was invited, and baskets of corn, apples, and pumpkins stood piled high. Toby filled his own bowl to the very top and sat alone in the corner, eating as fast as he could. But strangely, with all that food, his tummy did not feel happy. Across the table, the hens and ducks were laughing together, passing warm rolls to each other and saying thank you with every bite. Toby watched them and felt a small, cold hole in his heart. "Why do I feel so sad when I have so much?" he wondered aloud.
The Fullest Heart
Just then Daisy waddled up with her chicks and placed a warm, golden corn muffin in front of Toby. "You shared your corn with us last night," she said softly, "so we baked this for you." Toby's eyes went wide. He had never tasted anything so sweet. That evening, Toby gave away half of his corn sack to his friends, and for the first time, his heart felt fuller than his tummy. From that day on, Toby was the first to call, "Come and eat with me!" at every meal on Maple Farm.
Moral of the Story
Sharing does not make us have less. It fills our hearts with joy and friendship, and that is the truest feast of all.
