The Hidden Treasure in the Field
A dying farmer tells his three sons that a treasure is buried in their field. The sons dig the whole field searching for it — and discover a treasure of a different kind.
There was once a hardworking farmer who owned a large field, and he had three strong sons. But the sons were lazy. While their father worked from sunrise to sunset, they spent their days under the shade of the big tree, talking and napping, waiting for their father to provide for them.
The Father's Last Words
When the farmer grew old and fell ill, he called his three sons to his bedside. "My sons," he whispered, "I have not much longer. But I want you to know this: in our field, hidden somewhere beneath the soil, there is a great treasure. I buried it there many years ago. If you dig the whole field, you will find it." With those words, he closed his eyes and died. The sons grieved, and then, for the first time in their lives, they picked up spades.
Digging the Field
The brothers dug and dug. They turned over every inch of that great field, stone by stone, furrow by furrow. It was the hardest work they had ever done, and their hands grew blistered and strong. At first they complained and argued, blaming each other for the missing treasure, and the youngest even threw down his spade and walked home. But hunger is a good teacher, and by the third day he was back, digging harder than anyone. Slowly, something changed in all three of them. Their backs straightened, their arms grew thick, and the field they had once been too lazy to even look at began to matter to them. Weeks passed. They found old bones, a broken plough, and rusted horseshoes — but no gold, no jewels, no treasure chest. "Father must have been dreaming," the youngest said bitterly. "There is no treasure here." But the eldest looked at the field they had dug so deeply, the soil turned soft and rich. "Wait," he said. "We have done all this work. Let us at least plant the crop." So they planted wheat, and because the soil had been dug so thoroughly, the harvest that autumn was the richest the village had ever seen. They sold the grain and earned more gold than any buried chest could have held.
The Real Treasure
Then the eldest brother laughed, and the laughter woke something in all of them. "Father never lied to us," he said. "The treasure was here all along — he just buried it deeper than gold. It was in the digging itself." From that day, the three brothers worked the field together with pride, and they never sat idle under the tree again. They grew wealthy, but more than that, they grew wise, and they told their own children the same story their father had told them.
Moral of the Story
No reward worth having comes without effort. People who wait for luck to fall from the sky wait forever, but those who pick up the spade and dig — even when the task seems hopeless — usually find that the work itself was the treasure all along.
