The Sleepy Little Owl
Ollie the owl wants to stay awake all night like his family, but his drooping eyelids have other plans.
In the crook of the oldest oak tree in Whispering Woods, there lived a little owl named Ollie. Ollie had big round eyes, fluffy grey feathers, and one big problem: he could not stay awake.
Every evening, Mama Owl would wake up and stretch her wings. "Up and at them, family!" she would hoot. Papa Owl would blink twice and swoop off to hunt. Big sister Owlivia would glide silently between the branches.
But Ollie? Ollie would yawn so wide that his beak nearly touched his tail feathers. His eyelids felt like heavy curtains slowly, slowly closing.
Ollie's Brave Plan
"Tonight will be different," Ollie told himself one evening. He flapped his wings hard. He counted all the stars twice. He even tried standing on one foot, which made Owlivia giggle.
For a while it worked. Ollie watched the moon rise. He watched the fireflies dance. He watched a hedgehog shuffle through the leaves below. But then the night grew quiet, and the quiet was so warm and soft...
Ollie's head began to nod. Down, down, down it went, until it rested gently on his chest feathers.
Big sister Owlivia landed beside him and showed him her secret trick. "Watch the stars," she whispered. "Blink slowly, just like they do. Blink... blink... blink." Ollie tried it. The stars seemed to blink back at him, one by one, and each slow blink made his eyelids feel heavier and heavier, like soft velvet curtains.
The Nicest Surprise
Ollie dreamed the most wonderful dream. He dreamed he was flying over a sea of clouds, and every cloud was a giant pillow. He dreamed he was swimming in a lake of warm milk. He dreamed the moon sang him a song in a voice like Mama Owl's.
When he woke up at dawn, the whole family was tucked in beside him. Mama Owl brushed his head with her wing and said, "My sleepy little owl. The night will still be there tomorrow."
And Ollie smiled, because he had learned a secret: sleep is not missing out on the fun. Sleep is where the best adventures begin.
At dawn, when the whole family was snuggled together, Mama Owl began the morning hoot, the softest goodnight song in the woods. "Hoo-hoo," she sang, very gently. "Sleep tight, my owlets, till the moon comes round again." And one by one, every owl in the oak tree drifted into feathery dreams.
Moral of the Story
Resting your body and mind is never a waste of time; it is how we grow strong for tomorrow's adventures.
