The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs
A poor farmer's goose lays a golden egg every morning. But greed makes him lose everything.
Once upon a time, in a small village with green fields, there lived a poor farmer and his kind wife. They had a tiny house with a leaky roof, a little patch of land, and one white goose named Gussie. The farmer loved his goose dearly. Every morning, Gussie laid a fresh egg for their breakfast, and the farmer would pat her soft head and say, "Thank you, my good friend."
The Golden Egg
One bright spring morning, the farmer walked to the goose's nest as usual. But instead of a plain white egg, he saw something shining like the sun! It was an egg made of pure gold! His eyes grew wide, and his heart beat fast. "This cannot be real," he whispered. He picked it up gently — it was heavy and warm. He ran home as fast as his legs could carry him. "Wife! Wife! Look what Gussie has laid!" His wife gasped and hugged the golden egg. They took it to the market, and the jeweler paid them a bag of gold coins. "Our goose is magic!" laughed the farmer.
From that day on, Gussie laid one golden egg every single morning. The farmer and his wife were careful and patient. They sold the eggs one by one, and soon their life changed. They fixed the leaky roof, bought warm clothes, and ate good food every day. They were happy, and they always took great care of their wonderful goose.
Greed Grows
But slowly, slowly, a bad thought crept into the farmer's wife's heart. "Why should we wait for one egg every day?" she said one evening, her eyes shining with greed. "Inside Gussie there must be hundreds of golden eggs! If we take them all at once, we will be the richest people in the whole village!" The farmer felt uneasy. "But she is our friend," he said softly. "One egg a day is plenty for us." Yet night after night, his wife kept saying the same thing, until at last the farmer agreed. Poor, innocent Gussie! She had no idea what her greedy owners were planning.
A Sad Lesson
The very next morning, the farmer and his wife killed the poor goose and opened her up, hoping to find piles of golden eggs inside. But there was no gold at all — just an ordinary goose, like any other goose in the world. The magic was gone forever, because the goose was gone. The farmer and his wife cried and cried. They sat beside the empty nest and wished with all their hearts that they could bring Gussie back. But it was too late. Their greed had stolen their greatest treasure.
Moral of the Story
Do not be greedy. Be happy and thankful for what you have, or you may lose everything.
