Khadijah: The First Believer
Khadijah (RA) was a wise and generous woman of Makkah who became the first person to believe in Islam. This is the story of her faith, her courage, and the love that supported the Prophet ﷺ through his hardest days.
Before the first revelation came to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, there was a remarkable woman in Makkah named Khadijah (RA). She was known throughout the city for her wisdom, her honesty, and her noble character. A successful merchant, she managed her own trade with great skill, and the people of Makkah respected her deeply. But her greatest quality was yet to be revealed — the strength of her heart.
The Prophet ﷺ, then a young man known as Al-Amin — the Trustworthy — worked for Khadijah (RA), leading her trade caravans to Syria. His honesty and fine character impressed her so much that she proposed marriage to him. He accepted, and their marriage became one of the happiest and most blessed unions in history, lasting twenty-five years.
The Night That Changed Everything
When the Prophet ﷺ was forty years old, he would often go to the Cave of Hira to think and worship Allah alone. One night during the month of Ramadan, the angel Jibreel came to him with the first words of the Quran: "Read, in the name of your Lord." The Prophet ﷺ trembled. He had never experienced anything like this before, and his heart was racing with fear and wonder.
He hurried home to Khadijah (RA), his cloak shaking, and said, "Cover me! Cover me!" She wrapped him gently and waited until he calmed down. Then he told her everything that had happened in the cave. This was the moment when her true greatness shone — and her response changed the course of history.
The First Believer
Khadijah (RA) did not doubt him for a single moment. She held his hands and said words of comfort that every Muslim child should know: "By Allah, He will never disgrace you. You keep ties with your family, you help the poor, you honour your guests, and you stand by the truth." She believed in him completely — and so she became the very first believer in Islam.
Then she took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, an old and wise man who knew the earlier scriptures. When Waraqah heard the story, his face lit up. "This is the same angel that came to Musa," he said. "I wish I were young, so I could support you when your people drive you out." The Prophet ﷺ was amazed, but Khadijah (RA) had already given him what he needed most — belief, love, and calm.
Years of Loyalty
For the rest of her life, Khadijah (RA) stood beside the Prophet ﷺ through every hardship. When the Quraysh mocked him, she comforted him. When they boycotted the Muslims and food grew scarce, she spent her own wealth to help the poor and hungry. She gave everything she had for the sake of Islam, asking for nothing in return. She was also the mother of all the Prophet's ﷺ children except Ibrahim, and her home was the first house where the Quran was recited.
She passed away in the tenth year of the mission, and the Prophet ﷺ grieved for her deeply. He never forgot her. Years later in Madinah, he would still speak of her kindness, and he would send gifts to her old friends out of love for her. The angel Jibreel once brought her greetings of peace from Allah Himself — an honour given to very few. May Allah be pleased with her.
Lesson of the Story
Khadijah (RA) teaches us that true love is shown in action. She believed when believing was hardest, she gave when giving was costly, and she stood firm when standing was dangerous. Her faith was the first light of Islam.
We can follow her example by supporting those we love in their hardest moments, by speaking words of comfort instead of doubt, and by giving generously for the sake of Allah — just as the Mother of the Believers did.
