The Sleepers of the Cave
Seven young believers hide in a cave to protect their faith — and wake up to find that three hundred years have passed.
In a city ruled by a cruel king, the people were forced to worship idols. But a small group of young men refused. "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth," they said bravely. "We will never worship anyone besides Him." The king was furious and threatened to punish them if they did not give up their faith.
The young men knew they could not stay. One night, they quietly left the city with their few belongings — and their faithful dog, who followed them all the way. They climbed into the hills until they found a wide cave, and there they hid, praying to Allah: "Our Lord, give us mercy from Yourself, and guide us to what is right."
The Long Sleep
Allah answered their prayer in a way they never expected. He put them into a deep, peaceful sleep. The sun rose and set, rose and set — and they slept on. Allah turned their bodies gently from side to side so they would not be harmed, and their dog lay stretched out at the entrance of the cave, guarding them.
Years passed. Kings rose and fell. The city below changed completely. And still the young men slept, safe in the darkness of the cave, watched over by Allah.
The Waking
Then, after more than three hundred years, Allah woke them up. They rubbed their eyes and looked at each other. "How long have we slept?" one asked. "A day," said another, "or maybe part of a day." They felt hungry, so they sent one of them into the city with some old coins to buy food — warning him to be careful and not let anyone discover them.
But when the young man reached the city, he stopped in shock. Everything was different! The streets, the buildings, the people — and when he paid with his ancient coins, the shopkeeper stared at the money in amazement. These coins had not been used for hundreds of years.
A Sign for the People
Word spread quickly, and the people of the city came to the cave in wonder. The new king — now a believer himself — welcomed the young men with honor. They had gone to sleep as fugitives in a time of idols, and woken up as heroes in a time of faith.
Then, having fulfilled their purpose as a living sign, the sleepers returned to their rest, and Allah took their souls. The people built a place of remembrance near the cave, so no one would forget what Allah had shown them.
The Loyal Dog
The young men had not come to the cave alone. Their dog had followed them all the way from the city, trotting faithfully behind his masters. When they settled into the cave, the dog stretched out across the entrance — a living guard at the door.
And there he stayed, through all the long years of their sleep, stretched out at the threshold as if still on watch. The Quran itself mentions this faithful animal, honoring loyalty even in a dog. When you stand for the truth, Allah honors everything connected to you — even your companions.
Lesson of the Story
Faith is worth every sacrifice. Allah protects those who stand firm for Him — and He can do with time whatever He wills, turning a night's sleep into centuries.
