Long before any city was built or any road was paved, Allah decided to create a new kind of creature to live upon the earth. This creature would be different from the angels, who never disobey and never eat. It would be different from the animals, who cannot think or choose. This new creature would have a mind to learn, a heart to love, and the freedom to choose between right and wrong. Allah named the first of mankind Adam, and He honored him in a way He had honored no one else.

The Creation of Adam

Allah shaped the body of Adam from clay, from the dust of the earth. Then He breathed into him a soul, and Adam opened his eyes as a living man. Allah taught him the names of all things, so his knowledge was greater than what any other creature possessed at that time. Then Allah commanded the angels to bow before Adam, not as worship, but as a sign of honor, and every one of them obeyed. Only one refused. His name was Iblis, and his heart was filled with pride, for he thought he was better than a man made of clay. Because of his pride and disobedience, he was cast away from mercy.

Allah gave Adam a home in a beautiful garden where everything was pure and plentiful. He also gave him a wife, Hawwa, so they would find comfort in one another. Together they lived in peace, eating from all that the garden offered, with hearts full of thanks to their Lord.

The Whisper and the Mistake

Allah gave Adam and Hawwa one clear command: they could enjoy everything in the garden except one tree, which they must never approach. For a time they obeyed, and life was sweet. But Iblis, who hated Adam, waited for his chance. He came to them with soft words and false promises. He whispered that this was the tree of everlasting life, and that whoever ate from it would live forever. Adam and Hawwa listened to his lies, and they ate from the tree they had been told to avoid.

As soon as they tasted it, they felt a deep shame, and they quickly covered themselves with leaves from the garden. They knew they had made a mistake. Their hearts were heavy, and they feared the anger of Allah. Yet they did not run away, and they did not blame one another. They stood before their Lord, sorry and afraid.

The Words of Forgiveness

Then Allah taught Adam special words with which to ask for forgiveness, and Adam repeated them with a humble heart: Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers. These sincere words came from a heart that regretted its fault, and Allah, the Most Forgiving and Most Merciful, turned to them in forgiveness.

Allah then told them that they would go down to live upon the earth, and that this would be the beginning of a new life for them and their children. They would face trials and temptations, but guidance would also reach them. Whenever they slipped, they could return to Him, for His mercy is wider than every sin. Adam lived long on the earth as the first prophet, teaching his children to worship one God, and he never forgot the lesson of that first day: the one who turns back to Allah will never be turned away.

Lesson of the Story

Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) teaches us that everyone makes mistakes, but the mistake itself is not the end. What matters is what we do next. When we do wrong, we should feel sorry, admit our fault, and ask Allah for forgiveness with a sincere heart, for He loves to forgive.
