Prophet Ismail and the Great Sacrifice

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) had waited many long years for a son. He and his wife prayed and prayed, and at last Allah blessed them with a boy. They named him Ismail, and he grew into a kind, gentle, and obedient child. Ibrahim loved him deeply, and their home was filled with happiness. But one night, Ibrahim saw a dream that troubled his heart. The dreams of prophets are a form of revelation, and this dream was a command from Allah that would test the father and the son in a way no one had ever been tested before.

The Heavy Dream

In the dream, Ibrahim saw himself sacrificing his beloved son Ismail. He woke up shaken, for he understood what Allah was asking of him. It was a trial almost too great to imagine: to give up the child he had waited for all his life. Yet Ibrahim knew that the commands of Allah are always wise, even when they are hard to understand. He did not hide the matter from his son. He went to Ismail, whom he trusted, and told him about the dream with honesty and love.

Now the test passed to the young boy. Ismail listened to his father without fear and without anger. He was still young, but his heart was full of faith. He understood that what Allah commands is always for the best, and he answered with words that showed courage beyond his years.

The Brave Answer

Ismail said to his father, "O my father, do what you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient." Imagine the love and trust in those words. The son was willing to obey Allah completely, and the father was willing to obey Allah completely. Together they walked to the place where the command would be carried out, father and son united in submission to their Lord. There was no struggle between them, no complaint, only quiet faith.

On the way, their hearts were calm, for they knew that whatever Allah commands is full of wisdom. Ibrahim thought of the long years he had waited for this son, and Ismail thought of the paradise promised to those who obey. Each step they took was a step of love for their Lord, and the angels watched them with wonder at their perfect submission.

When they had both surrendered to the will of Allah, and Ibrahim had laid his son down, a voice called out to him: "O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the dream." Allah had seen their perfect obedience, and He did not let the sacrifice happen. The test was over, for it had never been about loss. It had been about trust.

The Ram from Allah

As a reward for their faithfulness, Allah sent a ram to be sacrificed instead, and He called it a great ransom. Father and son fell to their knees in gratitude, for Allah had replaced their trial with mercy. To this day, Muslims remember this event every year during the festival of Eid al-Adha, when they sacrifice an animal and share its meat with family, neighbors, and the poor. It is a reminder that no one who trusts Allah completely will ever be left without help.
