Prophet Zakariya and the Answered Prayer
In his old age, Prophet Zakariya had no children, yet he never stopped calling upon Allah in prayer. This moving Quranic story tells how his quiet, secret prayer in the sanctuary was answered with the joyful good news of a righteous son, Yahya.
Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him) was a righteous servant of Allah who spent his life in worship and in caring for others. He was the guardian of Maryam in the sanctuary, and he watched over her with a father's love. But as the years passed, Zakariya grew old. His hair turned white, his bones grew weak, and he had no children to carry on his mission after him. His wife, too, was unable to have children.
Many people in his place might have given up hope, but Zakariya knew his Lord better than that. He knew that Allah hears every prayer, and he had called upon his Lord many times in his life and had never been left disappointed. His heart remained full of hope, for hope in Allah never grows old, even when the body does.
A Quiet Prayer in Old Age
One day, when Zakariya entered upon Maryam in the sanctuary and saw the miraculous provision that Allah had sent her, a beautiful thought filled his heart. If Allah could provide for Maryam in such a wonderful way, could He not also bless him with a righteous son, even in his old age? Right there, in that blessed place, Zakariya raised his hands and called upon his Lord in a secret, humble prayer.
He told Allah of his weakness and his white hair, and he asked for an heir who would continue his work and the work of the family of Yaqub. He did not ask for a son for pride or for comfort in old age. He asked for a righteous child who would serve Allah and guide the people. It was a prayer of pure intention, whispered in the quiet of the sanctuary.
Good News in the Sanctuary
While Zakariya was standing in prayer in the sanctuary, the angels called out to him with the most joyful news: Allah gave him glad tidings of a son, and his name would be Yahya. No one before him had ever been given that name. Zakariya was amazed, for he was an old man and his wife could not bear children. But the angels reminded him of a simple truth: it is easy for Allah, and He had created Zakariya himself when he was nothing at all.
In his joy and wonder, Zakariya asked his Lord for a sign, so that his heart might be at peace. Allah gave him a sign: for three nights he would not be able to speak to the people, except by gestures, though he was otherwise sound and healthy. It was a sign that would remind him, and all who saw him, of the power of the One who answers prayers.
The Sign of Three Nights
And so it happened just as Allah had promised. Zakariya came out to his people from the sanctuary, unable to speak, and he gestured to them to glorify Allah morning and evening. For three nights he remained silent toward people, while his heart spoke endlessly to Allah in gratitude. Then Allah blessed him and his wife with a son, Yahya, who would grow up to be a noble prophet, wise and pure from his youth.
The story of Zakariya shows us that no prayer is ever wasted. He prayed in secret, in old age, in a situation that seemed impossible, and Allah answered him in the most beautiful way. Allah's mercy does not depend on our age or our circumstances; it depends only on His will, and His will is always perfect.
Lesson of the Story
The story of Prophet Zakariya teaches us never to give up on dua. Even when things seem impossible, Allah can change everything in a moment. Zakariya prayed with a sincere heart, and Allah answered him with a gift greater than he had asked for.
It also teaches us to pray for righteous things. Zakariya did not ask for wealth or comfort; he asked for a child who would serve Allah. When our intentions are pure, our prayers carry a special light.
